That "horrible buffered memory" is about a 3.5% handicap....at most. (The memory, chipsets, motherboards are all different.)
And one shouldn't say "but the FB-DIMMs are clocked faster" - the buffering is what enables the faster clock, as well as what adds the latency. The two tend to balance out, and the net result is that you can put 64 GiB of RAM on the Xeon - which you couldn't do without buffering!

What? There's something screwed with your Mail.app.
Think about it. If Mail.app used 100% of a core ALL THE TIME, people with single CPU machines wouldn't be able to do anything.
Mail on my G5 iMac is sat there at 0.0% CPU utilisation when it's not doing anything.I have a large library of mail and smart mailboxes that refresh every time it checks for new mail. If I have it set to every 5 minutes, it takes 3 or 4 minutes to refresh all my smart mailboxes. :)

Wow. That's quite a diatribe. Historically inaccurate, too. English common law descends from the Roman system of laws that predates christianity (and which was not based on judaism) and from Saxon law, which also has nothing to do with judeo-christian ethics.
And juries are given instructions to follow the letter of the law as explained to them by the judge. Further, in the U.S. system, only matters at law, not equity, are subject to jury trial, and, in many cases, only if the defendant demands a jury trial.

I'm not interested in what revisionist historians have come up with the justify this perversion of justice that you call "law". The roman empire fell a long time ago and while Roman law may have influenced much of our legal proceedings, including the structure of civil cases, I was talking about how civil disputes are generally dealt with. This process is based on Judeo-christian principles on how you settle disputes over land or labour. It has nothing to do with criminal law.

How big would a high quality feature length movie be?
And no, I havn't read all 6 pages of the posts, so sorry if it's been discussed.
Worth revisiting.
The raw uncompressed bitrate for 720p = 1280*720*24bpp*30fps/(1024*1024) = 633 Mbps for 1080i it's ~711 Mbps 320x240 it's more like 53 Mbps.
720p compressed in H.264 with 5.1 sound seems to work out to about 1100 MB for your typical 45 minute drama show (i.e. compressed down to ~3 Mbps). This compares to 200 MB for the same show from iTMS in 320x240 H.264 (700 kbps). Not bad when you consider that 720p has 12X as many pixels (1280/320=4, 720/240=3)
Basically your typical movie would be about 2GB.

The mac mini seems like the target for movies here, not iPods. There's a lot of talk about Airport express and how that might be the killer hardware, but there's more to it than that. Apple is competing against rental stores and netflix to watch movies. No one is just going to want to watch movies on an iPod, they are going to want it on they're TV. So why not have a network box that saves and plays the movies that is attatched to your TV? The mini is already positioned to do exactly that. No keyboard or monitor, maybe just a remote to run Front Row.
Download the movie to the mini, watch it on TV at your convenience. Mac video on demand. Start doing that with TV shows and all of a sudden, Tivo has got a serious contender, too.
The hard bit will be having full-quality movies sent to your home, VOD style.
The new iPod is a phone. There may be a video ipod, but I doubt that it's a main target for the movies.
I have this wonderful feeling that it'll be even cooler than this, but this is what I am expecting.

On a more serious and intelligent note, let's hope the screen and the rest of the body have a more seamless and look. The current mirror screen looks like it was slapped on a random body. They just don't go together like the previous gen. The Air looks much better.

USB 3 is coming next year. The only reason Apple has yet to implement it is because Intel hasn't. But that will change in Ivy Bridge.
Agreed. USB is on its last legs, for sure, but it will be around a little while longer before it fades away.
When Intel supports it, Apple will, because it will cost essentially nothing for them to do so, and is backward compatible with previous USB devices.
But, I don't think we'll be seeing a USB 4.

Key things said in your statement. First, believe it or not, people do spend a lot of time out, people have lives. I'm not saying you don't necessarily but, not everyone sits at home. When the time comes when its obvious physical media is actually dead, internet connectivity sure will be more reliable at that point. Its hard to say what data charges and such will be like at that point. Also, not everyone has or is able to get unlimited data so quit acting basing your arguments on that people do. Also, I'm assuming you have AT&T. In case you didn't know AT&T is already sending out messages to people with abnormally high data usage...even to people on unlimited plans saying stop it or we will change your plan to one our current higher end plans....i.e. 4GB. So until, cellular data is stable, reliable and the carriers do NOT want to gouge the customer on data....I want my local storage. One more point, physical media is one thing and local storage in terms of what we're discussing is not exactly the same thing. You're talking about CDs, blu rays and such. I'm talking about digital storage of .mp3/.aac/.mp4 and such. Not exactly the same.

You still don't get it. Look at where the future is going. Look at the storage on iPads, MBA's etc. There is not a need for massive local storage like there was in the past. Local storage is not necessary and just makes things more difficult when wanting to get music on multiple devices. Physical media is slowly going away bc it's old technology and there are better ways to do things. Local storage is the same thing man.

Perhaps TB will go differently than FW did. Apple has a more significant market share now than they did when FW was introduced. Plus, they're being smart by letting Intel take the lead in promoting TB.
What will make or break TB is peripheral support, and real world performance. Can USB3 keep up with a current SSD, even? If performance is notably degraded with USB3 and the ports both exist on the computer, and the peripherals are the same cost ... TB should do fine.

With all the programming and money toward the Sony owned rights, etc., the tech isn't worth it in a computer except to a small percentage.

Steve Jobs chooses his words very carefully. If Apple's holiday line-up was now complete - he would have said so emphatically.
That is exactly what I was thinking. I'm almost certain that Santa has got one more thing in his bag for Christmas.
1) Isn't Steve Jobs on record saying that a phone is the one thing that you don't have to convince a consumer to carry in their pocket? As in: "the future of the iPod is cell phone integration."
2) Anyone who listened to Apple's last quarter financial results call jumped when they got to talking about phones - they practically came out and said they were working on one, and trying to get it to market asap.
3) Apple has been consistently impeccable at timing products to hit the market at the right time (Macbooks for graduation/back to school, new ipod releases for fall/christmas). They know Christmas is the time to release this.
4) The buzz over this has been growing to deafening levels both from the analysts and the nerds.
